Re: Hope everyone caught this site
How come limited to 1/2A, why not a Cox .15 in that Pitt's or something?
I have all the goldberg C/L that I want so i guess I glossed over that... I'll always like those kind first.
There's something about a Beechcraft Bonanza V-tail with retracts using an .09 Medallion that sounds like a good combo.
It's good to see Brodak keeping things alive by supplying the 1/2A circle going with kits, engines and supplies. It's a glimer of hope for this kind of thing, where it is a time everything seems to be fading away.

Re: Hope everyone caught this site
I paid $12 for that kit when it first came out. It was my first built up wing balsa kit for a Babe Bee engine. I used light silkspan but recovered it with medium weight when I found it would puncture way too easy but I didn't want to make it heavy at first. Painted it just like the box and hot fuel proofed the decal. No Golden Bee. Would you hang a golden bee on this one...lol...i can just see it skid in now.
It's funny about these planes how you can feel just the slightest amount of weight change with them and where.
Check out the flying difference between the .5cc and .8cc tank sizes if you have them

Question: The site says "An all-balsa beauty that's just large enough to use a .09 for hot performance."
An .09? Can a Tee Dee .09 be mounted on this plane? Would you use a nylon mount?

Re: Hope everyone caught this site
I'm building a Li'l Satan now. I had a cannibalized kit on the shelf for 20 years and decided to take a look. Most of the parts are there except the LE and TE spars. But there were pieces so I could shape new ones. I used the jigs from my Li'l Jumpin' bean to get the shape close. I stacked them and fitted sandpaper to get to the Bean's shape and freehanded the rest of the way. I'll have to make a few balsa parts, but I've got all the wood except for some of the ply, which doesn't amount to much.
Here's a link to my build thread.

Allan: I dunno, contact the source and speak with Gene, the owner. I find him quite knowledgeable.

Re: Hope everyone caught this site
Hanging a Cox .09 on this would be just scarey. I don't know. But I do know how this is built with the nachelle and I would think about glassing it over for strength to the wing root sheeting.
My best Babe Bee would haul me around using sport fuel and a regular head. Now with loops you had to entice it. You couldn't just stand there and say "Loop" but it held the circle well and was plenty nimble enough when you put speed to it.

It looks more than a bit small for an .09...I get dizzy enough, as it is. I've heard the Akromaster is good with an .09, and a scratch built Easy #4. I don't know if I'm ready for scratch-building, yet.

Re: Hope everyone caught this site
I just got a Brodak reproduce kit and planning on beam mounting a TeeDee .049, but since the mounting is the same, at some point, I might get brave and try one of my Norvel .061s.
I think the .09 would be waaaay too much power and weight. I've read that a TD .09 is a .15 in disguise.

Re: Hope everyone caught this site
I have a Bratco SkyBaby hanging from my ceiling. I never did fly it, it is new right out of its box. It came with a Norvel .061 and white Tornado prop already on it. I also never did run the engine. I do have a Norvel .074 somewhere around here that I used to run.
Re: Hope everyone caught this site
I'm thinking about these mounts.
I like them because it would be a snap to adjust the CG without adding weight. My understanding is that a Norvel .061 is heavier then a TD .049. I could set it up so that it balances with the mounts for the TD all they was forward and then slide them aft for the Norvel.

Re: Hope everyone caught this site
And speaking of "scratch building" I once built and flew a .049 C/L model based on a common cedar roofing shingle. My friends derisively called it my "SOS" plane using those initials in the most uncomplimentary of meanings.
It flew not particularly well but it DID validate the hypothesis that, given enough lifting surface and enough power, anything can fly.
