colorless black widow
ok folks it's time for another round of our favourite game:
IS IT REAL?
(audience clapping wildly and cheering)
yep, this is what i bought:
[img] [/img]
is it an authentic colorless widow? i can see it has the stunt tank, but i can't see if the back plate is golden or not...
also, shouldn't the early ones have a no drag starter?
i hope you read this rusty, as i've read in rcu that you have some experience with these exotic bees.
PS: the guy also wrote that it is a CAT #150 on the box, so it should most certainly be one of the older lot.

Re: colorless black widow
Well, it is a rarer Black Widow but it is not one of the early 1973 Black Widows with that zero-drag red anodized drive plate. I would guess this engine was made sometime around 1990, check the box for a date when you get it. I know that Cox used to outsource the anodizing so when they would run out of anodized parts and the new parts were not in yet, they would throw the engine together with what ever parts were available. They did not however pull an Estes, they would only use parts that were for the engine. Very rarely do I ever hear of parts on pre-Estes engines that should not be on that engine. I would say that you do have a unique engine, there must be more black ones out there then all silver ones.
Re: colorless black widow
I've seen a few of these non anodized Silver Widows. But without getting a really close look at it, we cant be sure can we?
To be a Black Widow needs to be "Black", have a .062" venturi hole in the backplate, stunt tank venting, and dual bypass No.1 cylinder and probably a zero drag starter spring.
It looks to me like it is probably a post 1996 Estes one made from in-completed parts.

Re: colorless black widow
hmmm, well i don't know if it has a red drive plate or not...the one from the stoneway Group had a
snap starter AND a red drive plate, though most of the red color came off through the snap cam, at
least that's what they wrote. can you see if it has a golden back plate or not? it's hard to tell...
i don't think its *st*s. the CAT-number 150# marks its production era to be a pre *st*s, doesn't it?

Re: colorless black widow
Well, I can see that it is not from 1973 so it would not have a red driveplate. I did see a few early Estes Black Widows with no anodizing but I have seen more on ebay with dates ranging from 1990 to 1995 stamped inside the box. Since the sellers usually don't say right out what the date is, I sometimes notice that people ask the seller. It does have a snap starter (mid 1980s) and it does have a black plastic backplate (1990 to 2005) it also has a aluminum stunt tank (way back to about ?1997-8?) and it is also in a box so pre 2000 for tanked bee type engines. I am assuming you knew that it was a Black Widow, but yeah like Warren said. Check it out when you get it, you can always get your money back!
Do you still have the ebay link?

yep, here:

i'm not convinced that it is black. it seems to have a golden shimmer to it- ah well, even if it is *st*s,
i'll fix it up with a golden back plate and maybe a red drive plate!

Re: colorless black widow
This is a Black Widow
The later ones are not as good as these.
The plastic backplate was a failure and as was stated by Dale Kirn in a letter to Paul Gibeault one day,

In 1979, Cox made
made a major change in the cylinder & piston sizes (except for the TeeDee
series)
1. Cylinder -
a) went to 2-slit exhaust to prevent a fire from starting from over priming.
b) eliminated free port on 2-slit exhausts
c) "loosened" tolerances on I.D. hone
2. Piston -
a) finish grind - no longer has a "taper" at the top.
b) "loosened" tolerance on O.D. of piston
Unfortunately, the Black Widow has BOTH of the "loosened" tolerances in all
engines. If both are on the "right" end (cyl I.D. on the SMALL & piston on the
HIGH) you can have a fairly good engine. but the other way - very loose fit/poor
compression/hard restarts/poorer performance.

Re: colorless black widow
That is what most of the 1973+ Black Widows looked like and you will mostly find ones like that! Not too long ago, I seen a Black Widow tank kit new in its bag that was unanodized and had a black backplate. I'll try to see if I still have the picture. I know you are looking for one like this http://livingmasterpiece.com/stoneway/restore_engine.asp I have only seen a picture of it on that site but have read about it in several different places. It really doesn't make any sense as it is not Black and was called a Black Widow.

Talking about Warrens. I do believe that the one you have is a Black Widow (performance wise) but they don't seem to be the ones that go for the big money. The $40 you paid, is not too bad since it looks to be mostly new and does come with a box and papers. There is always that time I could be wrong and the previous seller stuck a product engine (was it the silver bee they called it?) into a Black Widow box. If it does have a #1 cyl and the venturi is correct, it should run like a black widow should.
I'm getting tired (3:14 AM here!)

Here's the tank kit I seen on eBay awhile back. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cox-049-black-widow-qrc-tank-kit-dual-vented-Orig-/260840791428?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cbb529d84

Re: colorless black widow
thats highly implausible. but i might fit it with the same parts to make one just like it.
i just looooove the silver BW, it doesn't have to be very authentic or anything...

Re: colorless black widow
i know i was kidding but you could just chrome the tank spinner and crankcase
Re: colorless black widow
I have purchased a few different BWs over the years to see the differences. I have 2 of the first ones in the spider jewel case with the rubber spinner. I have a couple of late 70's ones with the red anodized spinner that are great little runners and a few with the black plastic backplate that are hopeless. Come to think of it, I think I did get one of those silver ones too... I must go and have a look.
Re: colorless black widow
if it does have a plastic back, i'll probably replace it.
chrome-plating it sounds like an awesome idea...i'll see who does such things in our region.

yeah that is a lot but it should not be that much.
Re: colorless black widow
i hope...but appearently it has to be run through numerous acids, the copper coated, and before that happens,
they have to remove every little speck of grease or oil on it. yikes!
