Cox Engine of The Month
TD .09's started today

TD .09's started today
I have two TD .09's that I've bought in the last couple of months (My first Cox engines in probably 35 years) One appears older than the other...just cosmetic. I built a "test stand" by using a nylon TD mount screwed to the end of a 2X4, and clamped the 2X4 to a table. I mounted a Sullivan 1oz slant tank to the side of the 2X4 with rubber bands. It worked great. I just got a used, but really nice old original Cox battery box, and used that.
The first engine (I call it the "older" one) didn't want to stay running...it would run for maybe 10 seconds, then quit. I tried adjusting the NV, but nothing changed. I put on a Mecoa glow plug conversion head, and pulled out the glow driver...it fired up right away. I think the glow head might be going out...or maybe my lack of experience with Cox engines kept it from firing up with the glow head. It ran at a consistant RPM ( I don't have a tach, yet), and didn't surge, at all. I know it was running kind of rich, but boy did it scream!
The newer looking engine fired right up, after I leaned it out just a bit from the "factory" setting. It ran consistant, too. No surging...just SCREAMED!
I know one thing...These TD .09's are LOUD!!! Now I need to find a plane to put one of these in. I might try to build an Easy #4, an Akromaster, or a Blackhawk Phantom...

Re: TD .09's started today
I just acquired one also... My first larger then .051 TD... I think I am going to put mine on a Jr. Ringmaster. That is one Ringmaster I never had. I always wanted to have all 3 sizes of the standard RM. The Easy 4 is attractive, too.
The CL field near me is muffler optional.

CZ10,
I almost forgot about the Ringmaster Jr. I've bulit lots of car models and scratchbuilt 1/16th scale drag parts...but I don't know if I could build the "Easy". For an airplane "newbie" it probably wouldn't be so "Easy" (pun untended).
One BIG problem I have...finding a place to fly, that's fairly close.

Brodak makes a kit
http://www.brodak.com/shop_productdetail.php?ProductID=9083
But so does this guy that is on the Brotherhood of the Ring site
http://www.brotherhoodofthering.info/mbbs22/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=9&posts=28&start=1
His prices are good and I understand the kit are supposed to be good too. The Brodak kits include the bell crank, etc., but I don't think that is wort the extra $25.
He also has a size in-between the Jr.and the Baby that is 150 sq inch wing and beam mount that sounds perfect for a Norvel .061.

Ringmaster
The PDK LLC kit (Pat King) is the one I would build. I also like his "Flying Fool" kit for a .20 to .35...

TD .09
These are perfect for Jr. Ringmaster. As far a loud it depends on what you run. Ever hear new AAC Russian 2.5cc running at 30K? A friend had a R/M Jr. with TD .09 and we all flew it. Enjoyed flying little thing and it stunted fine. Engine ran flawless all day long.

Any idea what length and diameter lines? I need to invest in lines and I am trying to make up my mind. I'm thinking 35' x .008 for .049 - .074, 52' x .012 for .09 - 15 and 60' x .018 for .19 - .35. I know some use 60' x .015 for .35, but I am pretty sure it was required in contest when I flew many years ago that we use .018.
I should check the AMA site. There are likely guidelines.

AMA line diameters

This is for CL Aerobatics... Looks like I am OK with those diameters for up to .15, and could go with .012 on most .35 powered ships like a Ringmaster... But .015 would probably be a better idea.

Re: TD .09's started today
Unless you're particularly interested in using steel lines for 1/2A, I would suggest braided Spider Wire. It's very low stretch and quite small in diameter in sufficient weights to fly smaller planes.
Check McMaster-Carr (mcmaster.com) for stainless steel cable --- you can get .12 and .15 dia. cable @ .05/foot in lengths of 300' or more. While 300' may seem like a lot, it's 3 sets of 50' cables. When buying continuous lengths, be sure to allow for some loss in termination. Either type 302 or 304 stainless will work fine, but I generally get type 302 (price and breaking strength is the same for each).

It is a requirement for the field I am going to primarily fly at.
