Cox Engine of The Month
The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box

The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box
Nobody ever rings my door-bell always the breezeway or I leave the garage door open when expecting deliveries.
Opened the front door and there is this little girl with a ring in her nose with this great big package. Late teens early 20's maybe, the nose ring and covered with dust. Open van and West Virginia's country roads I suspect. Good for her, just a kid out of high-school doing it. Made me smile!
"Signature required sir." Reason for the door bell, she probably knocked on the breezeway door and I didn't hear her. Going a little deaf perhaps. Kid's would say - A LITTLE?
Dragged the box (also dusty) out to the garage and opened it - upside down.
No damage!

Re: The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box
Funny, the early models never interested me, now I'm all over them. They spent at least 70 years on my ignore list. Something old/new to explore.
Engine locked up, not from castor - factory preserve. A little MMO in each port loosened it. Needle unscrewed with some effort. My fear always leaving the tip of the needle inside the engine. Done that early on when I didn't use heat. Some MMO on the threads when I put it back in.
Still I took it apart. No way I'm removing the engine. I had so much trouble putting those little nuts back on when I did the first one.
Some diluted glass cleaner on a wet cotton cloth cleaned the fuselage. I let nothing touch that wing. Sparkles now. Someone tried to reglue the broken white Cox (not Kaysun) 6/3 with a glue, perhaps Formula 560 or Ambroid. I cleaned it off with a fingernail and some MMO. Also cleaned the faces with the wire wheel (Yeah, brutal) and cemented with Testors red tube. Decoration as originally supplied, not for use.
Poor picture, but no Z bend. Rather an up 30 degree and a 90 degree into the control horn. Interesting as the thin fuselage holds it in place.

Re: The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box
Thanks Mauricio, one of my more interesting model acquisitions.
Came with an APC 6X4E prop. E must stand for extreme.
Cox supplied instructions. Got a kick out of reading them......Prop nut on the first sheet and Propeller must be installed backwards on the second. First sheet not insect eaten, just age. Seller included the broken off parts.
Cox also must have supplied it in a "knocked down" condition. I have their Aracobra like that, simple box with no decoration.
Best tail skid that I have seen. Spring steel snapped into place. Simple and indestructable. They also tried to color code their control handles to the model. Love the knuckle protector. I used to find them in multiple Cox parts buys and wondered where they came from.
And, think about getting those nuts on especially upper left. No lock washers either. Drove me nuts, and the Cox employees did it day after day. One finger on the nut, a hand holding the airplane and another hand on the engine and another hand with a screwdriver. Nutz!!!!!!

That TD 1 is a thing of beauty, well done. I will see if I can find a prop in my stack of stuff.

Thanks CB. That one is clearly marked Thimble Drome. I don't recall seeing any and at first thought maybe Cox bought them from Kaysun. They made many more in black in that style and those appear on some models that Make Boesen has........I think.

Re: The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box
Hi Bob, great looking airplanes, good for you! You're right, it's a lot of fun discovering new stuff.
The prop is an early Thimble-Drone prop, they started making their own in the late 50's, Not sure, i think black was the later props (you seen them on first run PT-19) new it could of been early white and later white was replacement prop.

Re: The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box
Thanks Mark, now I remember seeing those cards.
I made the mistake yesterday of grabbing that repaired prop by the broken end and broke it off again. This time I screwed it down and added elevation and left it to cure over-night. You can't rush Red tube. Display only!!
I stuck an early black one on for now replaced soon with the repaired white until something better comes along.
Accessories supplied for both TD-1 and TD-3 were very similar. Levent has given me a clean copy of the broken-up instructions that I will be printing out on yellow paper.

Re: The doorbell, a FedEx driver, and a very big box
hooray for FedEx gal delivering, working, and trying her best.
the first few times I saw the nose-ringed, funny hair, tattooed up kids, I was a bit irritated.
foolishly mentioned this irritation my kid sister, who nearly immediately replied in email with a photo of 19 yr old me, purple mohawk, earring, checkered vans shoes, and she said "we all did it in one way or another - celebrate that they are finding themselves"
so I try to be nicer about body mods.
thats one cool plane

Yes, I was proud of her, wanted to tell her so but thought it would be condescending. Little thing, maybe 5'2" carrying that big (but light) package. Heavy dust all over her.
Grabbed that prop the wrong again and broke it. I'll never learn.
This time I'm going to pin it.
