Hobby Shop run - most of a PT-19
Traveling yesterday, and stopped at a hobby shop I hadn't been to before. Does anybody else do this, or is it just me? Google the hobby shops when in a new town, and stop by.
Thought it was a bust when we walked in, only rc cars & accessories visible. (Sorry, airplane guy talking.) Then spotted a Cox Attack Cobra heli on a back shelf. The owner says, "Oh, you like Cox stuff? It's all upstairs." So, he leads us to an unused office upstairs, it's loaded with unsold Cox product. He explained that when he was starting the business, Cox was on their way out, and he bought a lot of inventory at liquidation prices. Sold it online and locally for a few years, then the car market took over. What we were seeing was only what was left. Still, a trip back in time.
My buddy JP went a little out of control with a PT-19, a T-6 Texan, a "Top Gun" jet, and 6 SureStart engines.
There was just the one NIB PT-19, but I spotted a wing sticking out of a cardboard box. When I looked, the box was full of PT-19 replacement parts. So, I started putting one together. Got all the parts except the firewall and landing gear. I added an engine and a spare. Only downside is, since the parts were packaged for individual sale, they had no decals.
I also got a Cox wrench, not because I needed it, but because it's a variation I haven't seen.
I won't say what we paid, since I don't want you to hate me, but it was cheap.
I wish I had taken some pictures while we were there, but I didn't think of it til later.

That's quite a haul there, Duane. How far is the shop from you? Any chance he had Medallion engine parts? I'm looking for spraybars for .049/.09 (same PN), and .15 engines. Mine are RC variants (with some missing parts) which does me no good.

Quite a nice blessing there, @duaneh , you really did score. Plus, all the parts are in new condition. Much of the lower cost stuff on the 'net is aged, cracked, faded and / or broken. Anything in pristine or near pristine condition is now going for much much more than those on a budget are willing to afford.

Re: Hobby Shop run - most of a PT-19
Whenever I am in the US - whether on business or holiday (unfortunately I have not been there in the past 4 years) I am checking the neighborhood I am in for hobby shops in hopes I will bump into COX stuff..this is how I wandered into one South of Clearwater Florida 7 years ago (visiting a group company of my former employer, an international group of companies)...the place is called Phil's Hobby shop. Pinellas Park, Florida
https://maps.app.goo.gl/33DcU6XpWAMii8br9
I came too late, the very friendly shop owner Phil explained, because they had just sold out the last engine parts in bubble packs...at least I bought from Phil a couple of digital Hitec micro servos that still dependably work in my Lil Roughneck..
Duaneh, the wrench you got there looks to be for 09 size engines with the flats machined on their top fin, a rarity. I was looking for it on ebay, and finally gave up, but Matt of Exmodelengines eventually helped me with one...

Way to shop Duaneh , sounds like a good out of town trip . The decals aren't a problem have seen them on the bay . You going to fly it ?

Jim, there weren't many engine parts. All I saw were snap starter springs & cams, and a bag full of .049 Medallion plastic venturis.
Eric, sure I will fly it, if only to satisfy my curiosity. It seems very heavy to me.

Got some bad news for you, Eric. Those are not decals! Good score though, reverse color stabs can't be very common.
I thought I had a line on a firewall locally, but it was a dry hole. So, I started thinking about how to make one. I came up with this, it is laminations of 1/16 ply and a 1/4 dowel.
The laminations engage the grooves inside the fuse and retain the firewall as designed. The beginner-expert settings even work.
Here is the parts plane, ready to go. Still needs decals, though.

Actually, just FYI, often a link will contain all sorts of personal tracking info embedded in it. You can play it safer, allowing the others to go directly to an item by usually (most of the time, but not always) eliminating everything after the question mark.
Can be shortened to: https://60d46b49-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/coxengineid/THIMBLEDROME%20PT-19.pdf

I usually run a test case with the abbreviated link to see if it works first. Usually they do. Otherwise, you are including your own personal information embedded in the link, which I don't know about you, but I prefer that these companies have less dibs on me (and you, too), the better off we are.

Re: Hobby Shop run - most of a PT-19
You caught me, Eric! The only rubber bands I had in the shop were the big #64 bands. I usually use them for holding stuff together while glue dries. They didn't fit well on top, so I just ran the bands under the wings. There are hooks on the PT-19 fuse for this, so I can't be too far wrong.
Maybe you're supposed to use the hooks after the wing pegs get broken off?

Re: Hobby Shop run - most of a PT-19
Ok, I am done working on the PT-19 now. Got it ready to fly. I put some proper leadouts on it, so I can hook up my usual lines. Also, I painted the tail stripes on, and made the wing roundels from trim sheet. I know decals are available, but I don't like to buy anything I can make. I'm just wired that way.
Anybody remember this balsa PT-19? I built and posted it a few years ago. I have flown it, and it flys very well. I look forward to flying this Cox PT back-to-back against the balsa one to see how they compare.

Re: Hobby Shop run - most of a PT-19
I remember the build, but today first glance had me fooled. I thought I was looking at two Cox plastic PT-19s.
I bet the balsa one wins by a landslide! Can you pop them into a scale? Seeing as they have similar moments, and wing area, I would expect the lighter one to fly best.

Nice job on the red/white balsa model. It's a ringer. Also the painted rudder. How did you attach the wing?

Agreed, the balsa one was so well done that without a second look, I thought it was another Cox RTF.

The Tale of the Scale
Jim asked how the weight of the Cox PT-19 compared to the balsa one. Well here are the results. Surprised even me. I knew the plastic plane was heavier, but I didn't think this much.
The difference is due entirely to construction materials, they are absolutely identical in dimensions.
The balsa on was built from the excellent dimensioned drawing posted on Stunt Hangar by Keith Morgan.

On the red/white one, the wing is simply glued on. The later Cox models, like this one, have hooks molded into the fuselage for rubber bands to go under the wing.RSV1cox wrote:How did you attach the wing?

I'll say it...the Red One is better looking! I dare say it makes the plastic, real one look phoney! Mandela effect and all.

Re: Hobby Shop run - most of a PT-19
Thanks for the drawing and indicating the source, @duaneh. From those plans, one could also build a simpified profile fuselage PT-19 in balsa, corroplast or 3/16" (5mm) foamboard.
Yes, the weight reduction by using balsa is amazing, almost half that of plastic. I learned early on how much better because of lightness the balsa performs.
