TD O49 or 051
A local store has two NIB TD 049's that have been there for as much as 20 years. The curious thing is this ... both have the red carb body. Everything I have red online suggest that the 049 had a black carb body ad the 051 had the red. Yet, these are clearly brand new in their original packaging, clearly marked as 049's and yet have red carb bodies. Has anyone seen this before?

Well, why don't you ask to see the engines and then check to see if there is a #4 or #5 on the cylinder. If it has a #4, it is a .049. If it has a #5, then it is a .051. If there is no number on the cylinder (rare but I have seen it) then carefully turn them over to see if they have a line near the bottom skirt of the piston. If they do, then they are TD .051s in .049 boxes.
Re: TD O49 or 051
Toward the end when Estes was doing their mix and match, I remember reading that they had run out of black cases and used red ones on .049's.
As Admin said, check for the groove on the piston. If it's there, it's an .051.
BTW, the .049 and .051 make the same power by design. Purpose was to fly the same FF model in both 1/2A and A class.

Re: TD O49 or 051
Price isn't right. $115 each and after all these years they're still not sold. I wonder why? I tried to turn them over (to look for the groove on the piston to see if they were in fact 051's) and they both appear stuck from the old oil they shipped with hardening. I always find it amusing when small retailers will sit on inventory long after its perceived best before date and won't mark it down to make shelf space. I bought some Norvel parts from him and even he said, "no one buys this stuff anymore." When I said, "I do" he mumbled something about the "last of the dregs." A discount? Don't count on it!

im sure he will come down eventually.
Just keep trying maybe go there in a year or two and see if its still there or show him 5 of the lowest price you have seen online for a similar engine and he will see that his price is far too high.

Did you check for the cylinder #? #4=.049 and #5=.051
$115 is a bit much for those even if it is a .051.
As many of other members on here already know, my hobby shop is the rudest damn hobby shop you'll ever go in. They did give me a deal on 3 NIB Killer Bees (buy 1 for $30 and get the other 2 for $20 each) but they do have a NIB 1980s PT-19 and a out of the box but new Fokker Triplane. They want way too much for both of them. You can read more about my local hobby shop here (just scroll down, you'll see it)
Re: TD O49 or 051
Forget the colours, the simplest way to identify a .051 is to confirm the following:
1/ All TEE DEE .051 pistons are identified by a single groove on the skirt of the piston.
2/ The NFFS Medallion .051 also has the single groove on the skirt.
3/ The Original 1997 Killer Bee 051 has two very fine grooves. (not sure about the 2002 version)

Re: TD O49 or 051
Kind of hard to look for grooves in the skirt when the engines are stuck (at least stuck enough that I can't move them with my fingers.) I should have looked for the #4 on the cylinder but forgot. I'll have another peek when I go in again and maybe even ask if we can put a prop on them to help turn them.

Re: TD O49 or 051
IMO, $115 per explains why they have been sitting for so long. Recommend taking a "pass" and let them "age" in the store until the price comes down considerably.
