General TD 049 Assembly
Hi,
I have quite a lot of (about eight) TD 049s in parts and spare bits and pieces which I bought all of new between Bernie and Matt. The Surestart is my goto engine as I have really focused on them and have arrived at a build, maintain, run, schedule/program that sees me flying most weekends and with engines that start so easily and reliably its almost laughable. They are fantastic!
My TDs never seemed to be quite so simple and thats OK, I understand their heritage and purpose and have done a lot of reading over time and have pulled them out and started having a go with them again. As has been noted by many posters they dont suck overly well and are probably best on pressure. That said, I have found they tend to be leaky around the venturi, NV body, needle, and Venturi body. I found that if I assembled those components with Anaerobic permatex they seemed to stop leaking and ran quite well. Also used fuel tubing over the needle.
Is this normal for a TD 049? or am I gilding the lilly. They take a bit to get running but once running are fantastic smooth constant revs without that reed flutter in the top of the rev frequency. Does the starting of them get easier as they run in (or out) :-) ? Im using 25% nitro, 20% castor, 5 x 3 prop, TD glow head, two gaskets. Any little tricks that can help with starting them. Fuel is good, fresh, filtered, batteries good, plug good. They run well, sometimes start easy, sometimes not. Maybe its just a bit of a practice thing to learn the traits of the engines? Just like I have with my surestarts.

A hi-compression glow plug is best wit them Even better with a norvel plug insert if used a std glow plug try use just one head gasket But usually td . a very good engine, easy to start if its take long There is either too full or not enough fuel in the cylinder But very easy to empty the engine

Re: General TD 049 Assembly
Yabby you mentioned Bladder if that's what ur using it will take some getting use to ,, Seems to Me that most engine's run a little different and start the same .. And yes they get some what easier to run after some break in but that's not long , can't remember right off 30 minutes ? Yes in the Instruction manuals is right TD.15 to TD.049 https://dbabd7f0-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/nitroengine/15%20Tee%20Dee.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7cq61g6aSDvkfMine1Fce3R8CRbbnpRmVQQJsZBShbIqc-Xl3lyBp3qjXoSK3sOX8HThg1hvioM7aI4tBIgdXxE8ZN0efGMkvEays7UuKeFAmlllibZluN7STyLtFynOCgbQS0EQbNNjqKPGxuwe6GRBcckPEjEGwkPWtaQi5Sj4kAUoIfxQms08C_j_Ng7zfeeAdUa7RAHjjFEoqk3BXBHnLrWONg%3D%3D&attredirects=0

Thanks David and Getback
Its always helpful to be able to just get a general sort of idea from people given I fly mostly on my own with my lad, so dont have many people other then CEF to get little snippets and views and bits of peoples experience from other than this excellent forum.

Re: General TD 049 Assembly
I'm not much into eating crustaceans but the Yabby is seen as a bit of a delicacy out here. Not sure if South OZ Yabbies are the same as Victorian ones. I do remember as a kid sitting on our dam bank dangling a piece of string in the water with a chunk of meat or bone on the end. Once they nibble you have to yank them out quickly before they let go. Can't say I ever caught one. Wouldn't have known what to do with it if I did.
Whoops, thread hijack!!

Re: General TD 049 Assembly
yep, they are the same but they are better at footy (Ozzy rules) than the Vic ones
I used to catch them where I went camping and trout fishing in a little creek near burra in the lower north of SA. We would catch heaps of them, boil water in a 20 litre drum from the creek over the campfire at night, once boiling the yabbies go in for a couple of minutes, then out they come into an old esky with crushed ice in it and everyone sits back, eating yabbies and drinking cans of beer.
Oh yeh, you break the head off then just peel the shell of and eat the tail, then onto the next one. and or beer. Lol. even better if you have a couple of freshly caught trout cooking over the fire.
great time! :-)

So, it took Rod to define what a Yabby is. Still looks like a Louisiana Crawdad/fish to me. They boil and eat them there too.

Re: General TD 049 Assembly
Any brand of cooler is pretty much referred to as an "Esky" out here. It was obviously the dominant brand in the old days and the name stuck regardless of the brand. I guess it's a bit like Americans referring to a photocopier as a Xerox machine regardless of whether it's actually a Xerox.
Some people get up to a bit of shenanigans.

Thanks, Rod. My wife is out of town, and I'm sitting her alone, laughing out loudly.
Thanks for the link and lesson.

Re: General TD 049 Assembly
Eskys are also very good when the content (beer etc.) is getting low and others at a sporting or such event are getting bored, if there is a bit of a hill, Esky Racing starts, where people sit on their eskys and race them down the hill. Especially good when its also been raining. This is a bit more of a thing in far north australia in the wet season, when it rains all the time but is still mod 30s or mid 90s your scale. And people are out watching sport etc. and drinking standing in the rain. Lol. Foamies which are an esky made of cheap form are good at keeping beer cold, but often are single event use eskys as they tend to break under the stress and strain. Lol.
Far North Australia is a great fun place, especially for young adventurous people. The fun has been reigned in a bit since the late 70s early 80s but is still a great place to go and experience.
Yep a yabby is probably very similar to a crawdad, but its a yabby. Lol. :-)
