Cox starter spring prototype?

Re: Cox starter spring prototype?
It looks like a poorly wound standard Cox starter spring?
Maybe when they had to load another new spool of wire into the coil machine to make the starter spring?

We were trying to have some fun but you clued in right away The spring was in a batch that we had manufactured.
Re: Cox starter spring prototype?
Because it has a long arm, so it must be manufactured for larger diameter propellers to supply large moment to start engine.

No no this is a spring that we got with the 3,000 others we had manufactured and is simply one that was not done properly.

Re: Cox starter spring prototype?
It's a non-disengaging dual direction spring, so you can run your Cox engine at 0 RPM.

Yes y have one runing this way Today I assembled an engine, it's very first sign of life was 0 rpm For an uninitiated this could seem disappointing and is Not very promising at first sight after let the engine heat up litle at 0rpm funy sound y stop him wit hand and give it a Good swing now it run like champions that old black widow bring back To life wit the new desing backplate run like he should y dont use the spring
Y like the new backplate work bether than one old wit loose neadle and leaky Bolt y have build couple wit old parts wit them y nead spring without the cam if use the cam type on them wil Not work so Good for 0rpm

When a vendor makes 3,000 units there is no expectation that each unit will be examined. Over the years we have had a number of individual "anomalities" in production runs for various items.
All good and makes for conversation topics .

Sorry Bernie,
I was a Quality Engineer at Caterpillar's Fuel Systems in Pontiac Illinois.
We made out own coiled springs for our fuel injectors.
I saw problems like this either at the start of a new spool or at the end of the spool when making our springs.
It was my job to check the compression, over-spool tension, and pre-tension length -- post tension length of the springs during production when they were being made by the coil spring machine.
The real fun part was when an errant spring would shoot out of the machine (accidentally) and scare the be-jesus out of you when it hit you. Even when you know that it does happen once in a while. It was funny when a newbie would get hit with a spring.
The springs were only 1/2" long and 1/4" in diameter. Maybe weighted 1/4 of an oz?
