Cox Engine of The Month
"My Cox .049' Hot Rod Lincoln..

"My Cox .049' Hot Rod Lincoln..
This engine is a Cox reed-valve .049 2-stroke/glow-engine made from mongrel parts. An integral 8cc Golden Bee stunt-vented late-model* tank-bowl and matching backplate which has a larger .082" dia. venturi. The Needle has a Paul Gibeault recommended mod. to cure air-leaks.
The cylinder is a #2 w/SPI.. and has delightful compression. The reed is an old-school beryllium/copper star-type w/circlip retainer. The C-case is an early plain-anodized example.. but more than capable of delivering the punch. You guys know what I'm talking about. It's rat-rod style.. which I kinda' like..
Here's my engine.. with a pair of stock/OEM Golden Bee's that I was lucky to score a few years ago.
This engine will be a test-engine for my latest C/L design; The Fulcrum Flyer.

Looks nice!
Built from parts huh... sound more like this :
Your engine looks better than what is described in the song though! LOL.

Thanks Jacob! That's a funny song! I like Johnny Cash.. but I'd never heard that one before. Similar style as "A Boy Named Sue"..
Re: "My Cox .049' Hot Rod Lincoln..
If you want to make it a hot rod you are going to have to lose the #2 cylinder. Increasing the venturi size isn’t really effective when it’s choked down with the single bypass. Good candidate for modification though.

If I'm not mistaken, the large venturi backplate was used on theCribbs74 wrote:If you want to make it a hot rod you are going to have to lose the #2 cylinder. Increasing the venturi size isn’t really effective when it’s choked down with the single bypass. Good candidate for modification though.

Golden Bee R/C, which also featured a two bypass cylinder with
a throttle sleeve.

Hi guys! Wow.. I appreciate your chiming-in. Bob, I'd never known of an RC version of the Golden Bee. The original engine that had this back-end may have had a #1 cylinder..? ? but I don't recall a throttle-sleeve.. or a cylinder that was milled for one. It's an engine that's been in my family since new.. but wasn't in my possession until some years later.. along with another Golden Bee which is your garden variety Babe Bee with 3 more cc's of fuel capacity and a stunt-vented tank-bowl. Oh yea.. and the yellow-gold anodizing.
Ron, yea.. you're right. I'm having brain-farts lately. Maybe I'm Covid Asymptomatic? I should know my Cox cylinder #'s by now.. I'm losing my mind more lately..
.. I'd actually misplaced the engine that Matt (ExModel) sent me back in July of 2019 (Prize for CEF Cars are the Stars contest) well.. I'd mounted it in the F8F-2.. and had forgotten about it.
It's been a tough model to get flying;: this second engine was easier to start.. but the gear-mains are too close to the CG, causing nose-over/R.O.G. stooge-launches. Luckily there isn't any significant road-rash from the very-few launch attempts. I sOoOo want to fly that airplane. Maybe try adding tailweight in sm. increments.. Also; I was never used to flying with lines as long as the ones I was using.
I think that I still have a decent C/L flying site though. It's a school/property that was donated by an area philanthropist.. which was closed a couple of years ago. It's a popular dog-walking area.. but there are several spots to fly.. even if you're flying 60ft.+ lines. The fields will need mowing though. There's plenty of pavement for 1/2A R.O.G. launches!

I have a new R/C Golden Bee. Not in the package, just never run. I believe it might be a dual bypass cylinder. I should look at it closer.

She might have a #3 cylinder, Ken, although #3 hasKen Cook wrote: I have a new R/C Golden Bee. Not in the package, just never run. I believe it might be a dual bypass cylinder. I should look at it closer.
been somewhat of an ambiguous number. I have a
R/C GoldenBee, and I'm pretty sure it has a stepped
and ground cylinder. Will check tomorrow.

"Ambiguous".. true-that. Photos of a #3 that I have. It "does have a #3 stamp.. tough for me to photograph..)
my #3 appears to be a later (thick-wall) cylinder, which has flats milled for the Cox wrench.. but its OD has not been ground for a sleeve (exhaust-throttle). It has the later dual-slit exhaust-ports.. and doesn't have SPI.
..and is a single-bypass cylinder..
