Fuel syringes/bulbs

Fuel syringes/bulbs
I'm looking for means to fuel my tiny Coxes (.010 & .020). I have a small Sullivan fuel intended for priming larger engines but it appears too large for the "lil' guys.
A syringe would be ideal be I can't finds source. I've tried animal hospitals, farm and drug stores, medical supply outlets etc. with no luck. (Sometimes store clerks look at me as though I'm trying to "shoot up"). LHS's only seem to carry rubber bulbs.
Any suggestions or sources would be appreciated,
Thanks, SD

Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
Use the one that you have for larger but at the end slip a piece of .010 fuel tubing in a bit like a small adapter that is what I use to do.
And a while back micro flight dude was giving some away the he bought a bag of.

Any of the sources you listed should be able to provide a syringe. Just tell them that you want a disposable plastic syringe, 25 to 50cc capacity, no needle. Use the fuel tubing over the end as posted to fit the tank nipple.
Oh yeah, don't wear your tie-dyed shirt and flash the peace symbol.
Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
Picked up one of these at a local Petco pet store. I use it for mxing small amounts of paint. I have pulled up butrate thinner and retarder and the rubber plunger didn't melt, so it SHOULD be ok with nitromethane.

A farm/pet store should be able to get you a smaller syringe. They usually stock them for folks that want to administer Parvo shots to dogs. Tell them no needle is preferred.

I'm not sure if they will work with engines smaller than .049, but I use them with all my engines and they are LIFE SAVERS!

Thanks PV Pilot for the tip as I did exactly that at Petco. They come in two sizes and they are used for the oral feediing of puppies. This syringe is intended for NON-Medical purposes; an important distinction. I got the smaller .10 mL size for my TD .010 & Pee Wee .020.
The tip of the feeding syringe needs to be "necked-down" to accomodate fuel tubing if the appropriate size. This may easily done using progressively smaller short lengths of tubing. Since the intended use is "non-medical" the syringe will NOT accept a hypodermic needle. (GEE, I wonder why?)

Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
I only bought one syringe and the material from which it is made would not "bond" to epoxy; it lacks the porosity to do so.nitroairplane wrote:Or you could have bought some epoxy and finish and use those syringes.
Graduted "toobing" sizes allows adaptibility for different applications.

I'd be concerned that any epoxy residue remaining would contaiminate the fuel being used in the syringe.

I never thought of that.

Sure, glad I could help, they only had the larger size at my Petco.
I'm liking the syringes that microflitedude linked us to on ebay. Might grab a handfull of those as the couple of shorter tiped ones I have are seeing(?) there age. Really handy for dribbiling after run oil into the motors as well, which is very important if they sit more that a week or so in humidity.

Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
I've only used a cox fuel can and their hose, it was all I had at the time but I even think a small, one or two ounce flex tank or small plastic bottle converted with a spout might be nice to use for fueling.
Are you looking for no over-spill when using the syringe (measured) or is it more of a reason?

Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
For the small (.020/.010) engines, I use some small syringes with the needle from Fleet Farm. They are sold for animal use only. If your afraid of getting poked, just carefully cut the end of the needle off without squishing the tube. I do sometimes get a look after I say "no" when they ask "are these for farm use?".

No, convenience principally and the ability to precisely control fuel inlet flow too.

Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
For 020 engines I have found a syringe that will fit perfectly onto the filler nipple. They are the 5ml 'BD plastipak' syringes made by Becton Dickinson S.A. You will not need a needle nor any fuel line to step the nozzle size up or down, it just fits perfectly. By shear luck, really, I found them at my local pharmacy. I believe that they also sell online. They are called Gompels pharmacy. It's a few pence per syringe. A downside is eventually the fuel seems to melt away the printed graduation markings. I use them for mixing small quantities of rc car fuel and castor oil in order to make my own 1/2a fuel so this makes a difference to me but if you are just filling tanks then perhaps the erased markings won't bother you.

Yes, I think I've seen it on your youtube vids but te vid you just posted shows what looks more like one of those alcohol rub / no water hand cleaner bottles that has been repurposed. Also a pretty cool idea but is it HDPE plastic?

oh sorry wrong video but you get the idea.
That was an alcohol hand sanitizer container but it is fuel proof it is from boots i think i let fuel sit in it over night to check if it was good and then i ran the fuel through a surestart and it ran the same as before so i figured it was good.
oh yeah and it is good to have you here.
Re: Fuel syringes/bulbs
Thanks (Going a little off thread for a sec) Still interested in some fuel? I don't mind posting a small quantity to you so you can compare to the GN25 but i still need to order some suitable containers before sticking any in the mail. This is how I know about the HDPE plastic requirement - been reading the MSDS for our fuel chemicals. I don't think the postie would appreciate being covered in a methanol, high nitro and castor mix, especially if he or she is a smoker

If you like we can do a trade as in I send you maybe 200 ml of GN 25 in the original container and when you have used it up you could send me back 200ml of your own fuel in the same container then we avoid that sort of issue.

I sent for a bag of those. I've always used just the cox filler tube and can or hand pump which is a pain. I have a fuel bulb too but havent used it because i havent run any engines since I've bought it.
I figure it would be a good way to measure up small batches of fuel also
