Cox Engine of The Month
Testors Galax N9

Testors Galax N9
Yesterday, a few of us Philly Fliers made the galaxy a safer place. The old Testors Galax plane took to the air. This baby is a real slug. It flew and it brought a lot of laughs and smiles to all who were watching. First flight was on 10% and it didn't do as bad as I thought. Afterall, it flew. Second flight and for all you Space Balls fans, we attempted " Ludicrous " speed as we tipped the vitamin N to 40%. Audibly, the engine made a lot more noise but performance was only slightly better. It left my hand on launch with a lot more promise. The ole pipe bomb was singing away in there. Surprisingly it didn't hand gernade. A lot of laughs and it made me wonder how many actually did fly. Dan was flying on a brand new out of the box Cox Skylon handle a real relic.

I enjoyed that! You guys all laughing and having fun. That's really what it's all about!
Re: Testors Galax N9
Too cool! Yeah, it needed a little more anti-gravitational power to fly interstellar!!
But...it flew!
But...it flew!

Man! that flies better than I thought it would. Mine's been sitting in the corner for years as I didn't think it would actually fly. I'll have to repair the elevator on mine and take it out for a flight, too. I don't think I could fly at Ludicrous Speed, I'll have to settle for Worp Speed.

Re: Testors Galax N9
I really enjoyed watching it fly, must say though, it looks better than it flies!
Inasmuch as I enjoy watching these RTF's fly again, the term that Comet kits had, "Balsa flies better!" (or was it SIG or Guillow? ) brought me to enlightenment with my first Sterling Beginner's Fokker E-III Eindecker with Babe Bee engine. That plane was darn near indestructible when flown over a grassed lawn.
Thanks, Ken for sharing.

Excellent!! Well done to the Pipe Bomb. Actually, later in the first flight video when it leaned out a little it did some impressive laps and flew nice and level. Better than my Testors P-40 which only ever flew nose-up.

Re: Testors Galax N9
I have to ask; does anyone know of any experimentation done with non-Testors props on the Testors reed-valve or rotary-valve engines? There are a lot of different modern/replacement "quad-copter" propellers on the market in 4" and 5" diameters that might improve performance. The Testors OEM 1/2A propellers weren't exactly what we'd call "cutting-edge" aerodynamically. Most aero-modelers probably wouldn't want to waste their time.. but you never know. There are more propeller choices available now.. than there were ten years ago.. let alone fifty+ years ago.. when these airplanes/engines were being designed.
Re: Testors Galax N9
I picked up these "DAL" Cyclone 5046 3-blade props for my Cox .049/.051 engines.
Maybe too much prop for that engine.. but there are smaller props in a variety of sizes.
These DAL prop-hubs are beefy.. like the previous DAL 2-blade 5040's that I'd obtained a few years ago. They're sold in packages of x2 R/H and x2 L/H profiles for quad-copters. I like running L/H props on the reed-valve engines for C/L flying. Cox L/H OEM props are getting harder to find.. and I don't know that Testors ever used a L/H prop on any of their RTF "FlyEm" or any other series of 1/2A C/L models.

Great job...!!
Let's have a moment of silence for all of these planes that were lost on Christmas morning.

Can you imagine the carnage? Average time each, less than ten seconds?TD ABUSER wrote:Great job...!!
