"Cox" multi-cylinder engine

Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
7 day auction with a $.99 starting bid on eBay will represent one value. These go for good money. Looks like it has a roots blower on the back to pressurize the crankcase. Ralph Barnett was one builder of these types of engines. My guess is $300-500 depending on who wants it bad enough.

Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
We always start auctions @ $0.98 but the issue is that we are being offered the engine for sale; so it's a bit of a leap of faith, never having sold an engine that has more than one cylinder.
Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
Maybe just me but the cylinders don't look like .049s. Need something in photo to give perspective.

I think you're right. Looks like .09 cylinders possibly which would make it .36 displacement. Carb intake looks too small for a .60 displacement using .15 cylinders.

Well, I'm not interested in owning one, but I'd sure love to see the crankshaft setup.
If you decide to take a look inside the case, please take pictures!

Certainly looks to me like it's a geared set-up- Four separate engines/crankshafts geared to a central prop shaft. Pretty common system.

Not sure if we are going to buy the beast …
Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
Video of the engine running. Non running junk go for over $100. If it really runs then video should be easy to get.
There have been several engines that are somewhat similar. Some have been heavily blogged. Good luck. I don't have numbers.

It has piston pins making me think it is a .15 piston. Old style thin cylinders. I thought geared together but wonder how the carb would work. The price can vary so much with hobby stuff. Could have taken 20 or 40 hours. Would the guy get paid $50 an hour? Whatever someone is willing to pay.

Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
With four Cox .15 cylinders firing at the same, and no mufflers, that thing will be loud....

Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
Pretty neat setup, but I wouldn't call it "an engine". Looks like it has four complete separate Medallion engines mounted into a cluster with a neat metal shroud covering it all. Semantics, I know. Still, a very interesting piece of engineering. I like how the engines are mounted "backwards" to get the driveshaft turn the "right" direction after the reduction gear. Pretty ingenious indeed.
It would be interesting to see the intake manifold of that thing. And to hear the thing run of course. The hot-rodder in me is already thinking of converting it to Tee Dees and quad carbs

That's a interesting site Levent , I would say the engine would probably go for around 600-750 with the video and a good write up .

Another four cylinder at:

"A rare vintage Ametek-Calmec XA904 .61 glow four cylinder radial model airplane engine. It is a four cylinder radial utilizing four Cox Medallion .15 glow engines. It has opposing cylinders simultaneous firing. It features fully machined components, ball bearings carrying a central prop shaft and dual K & B Multi-Speed carburetors linked together. It turns over smoothly with very good compression on all four cylinders. Find this Pin and more on "Multi Cylinder" model I.C. engine by Steve Betts"

Re: "Cox" multi-cylinder engine
It is confirmed that the engine is comprised of four .15 Medallion engines. Now comes the task of finding a home for it and making the (European) seller an offer. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread
