When I learned to run diesels in the mid/late nineteen fifties I used a glove with my 2.5cc diesels. The still kicked the dickens out of my hands...lotsa cuts. Wore out one glove, used the other glove on the wrong hand to finish up the pair. Had a Frog 2.49, Webra Mk-1. Also had the Supertigre G-30 (or was it G-33 - 2.5) and the G31 (1.5), the BB ones with the intake in the rear. All were excellent engines.

I love diesels and they are more harsh on the hands than glow engines due tooth higher compression ratio so props "pop over" with more force.
Some of my diesels are AE .1cc,arne hende.1cc, valentine diva 0.098cc,clan .24cc, frog 100 and paw 19 there are many more but i the ones listed are what came to mind oh yes and several cox conversion inuding .010 .020 and .049 I am still working on getting stronger cranks for the .010 diesel.

SuperDave

"Little Toot" was/is a cartoon railroad locomotive that was noted for his determination to pull heavy loads and is similar to the more modern "Thomas the Train". Both are appealing to children.

Very Happy I think that was my favorite book when I was too young to know how to read. The Little Engine that Could is the title I recall.

What GREAT days of innocence those were! THEN our perspectives broadened. Sad Sad

I still have a Jim Walker glider with folding wings. With wings folded it was launced using a large rubber band on stick. It rose and as it slowed the wings extended to allow it to glide to the ground.

And now, over 60 years later, I'm still messing with airplanes. Flying

that is something that Cox and only Cox engines have,
while there are other better and more fun engines and planes our generation Cox engines just make us feel like kids again and that feels great to me at least.

Cox .020 Engines - Page 2 Empty Re: Cox .020 Engines

Post  AT1984 Wed Aug 24, 2011 2:23 pm

gcb wrote:I was in my LHS shortly after the first batch of Pee Wee .020's arrived in my home town (Lexington, KY) back in the fifties. I snapped one up and quickly built a CL plane for it...which, of course brings up a story:
Having never run one, I totally underestimated its power. The plane had a 12" wingspan and a built-up box fuselage. I was running about 8' of dacron 1/2A line. The props had not yet arrived so I carved down a wooden 5x3.
Started the engine and, since I was alone, held the plane in my right hand and the lines and handle in my left, and launched. It didn't take long to realize that there was MUCH more power there than I had estimated. Turned as fast as I could but it proceeded to wrap the lines around me with the flight terminating when the prop hit my leg. I thought, STUPID,STUPID,STUPID...but fun! I still have that Pee Wee .020 engine, plus a couple of others I have acquired since then.
I never scored a TD .020 though, wish I had.

What is your experience with the Cox .020's?

George

Now THAT is a funny story. That would have never happened to my friends and I...we couldn't keep a Cox engine running long enough!

let it run rich for about 5 runs with glow clip connected then still run it rich for the next 2 runs and lean it out.

really it is just like running the engine in but it can be done even when the engine has already been used.
that is what i have done with my 4 pee wees and they all run great now even the ones i got second hand.

Cox .020 Engines - Page 2 Empty Baby Baby Flite Streak

Post  tubebass Thu Aug 25, 2011 9:51 pm

When I was 12 or 13 years old in the mid 60s, I made a Flite Streak using the half-size drawing that came with the Baby Flite Streak kit, and powered it with a Pee Wee .020. I would launch this 12 inch span rocket ship as described in the original post. My secret weapon was the Cox Skylon control handle, I could quickly let out more line so as not to be hog-tied. I've never had the nerve to try that trick with a larger model!

Do you know the story of The Interceptor glider and the military uses?

Is it me, or does anybody see enough difference in the text of the words The Interceptor in my post above that indicates it is a hyper link? I am viewing on an iPad, but I would think a few others are too. I see very little difference - just slightly darker, but it certainly doesn't stand out.

I don't. I think some bright blue would be good.
